The Best Sunsets in Rhodes: Our Top 5 Spots

The Best Sunsets in Rhodes: Our Top 5 Spots

Few spectacles rival the setting sun over the Aegean Sea — and Rhodes offers some of the most breathtaking sunset vantage points in all of Greece. Discover our five favourite spots where the sky ignites and the ancient island reveals its most enchanting face.

The ancient Greeks believed the god Helios drove his golden chariot across the sky each day, returning each evening in a blaze of fire to the sea. Nowhere does that myth feel more alive than on the island of Rhodes, where sunsets are not merely a daily occurrence but a ritual — a slow, golden ceremony that stops the world for a few luminous minutes.

Whether you are sipping chilled Assyrtiko on a hilltop terrace, watching the sky shift from amber to violet above a medieval tower, or simply standing barefoot on warm sand as the last light melts into the Aegean, a Rhodes sunset is among the most unforgettable experiences the Mediterranean has to offer.

Here are our five favourite spots to watch the sun go down — all easily reachable from Olympus Hospitality.

1. Filerimos Hill: The Olympian Perspective

Perched 267 metres above the western coast of Rhodes, the hilltop sanctuary of Filerimos offers the most commanding sunset panorama on the island. The site itself is steeped in mythology — ancient Ialyssos, one of the three great Doric cities of Rhodes, once flourished here, and the ridge was said to be sacred to Zeus himself.

As the sun descends toward the horizon, the valley below turns molten gold, the sea glitters in copper and rose, and the silhouettes of cypress trees frame the view like a classical painting. Arrive an hour before sunset to explore the Byzantine chapel, the peacocks that roam freely through the grounds, and the famous Avenue of Calvary lined with cypress trees. Then find your spot on the western terrace and let Helios do the rest.

Filerimos is approximately 25 minutes by car from Olympus Hospitality — a perfect evening excursion before returning to your suite for a candlelit dinner.

2. Rhodes Old Town Walls: A Medieval Stage

Few sunset settings in the world carry the weight of history that Rhodes Old Town does. The medieval fortifications — built by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century and among the best-preserved in Europe — glow deep amber and ochre as the evening light catches their ancient stone.

For the finest vantage point, make your way to the western section of the moat promenade, near the Gate of Amboise, or climb to the upper town where glimpses of the sunset frame the cobblestone alleyways in pure cinema. The contrast of golden light against the dark silhouettes of the Palace of the Grand Master is, quite simply, magical.

Rhodes Old Town is just 10 minutes from Olympus Hospitality — one of the many reasons our guests find themselves wandering its streets most evenings.

3. Ixia Beach: Where the Sea Catches Fire

Just west of Rhodes Town, the long sandy stretch of Ixia Beach faces almost due west — which makes it one of the island's most reliable sunset watching spots. The beach is wide, uncrowded in the early evening, and fringed with beach bars and tavernas where you can settle in with a glass of local wine as the sun begins its descent.

The Aegean here turns extraordinary shades of tangerine and crimson, reflecting off the gentle waves in rippling bands of colour. Windsurfers — Ixia is one of the best windsurfing spots in Europe — cut elegant silhouettes against the blazing horizon. It is a sunset that feels both serene and wildly alive.

From Olympus Hospitality, Ixia Beach is just minutes away on the coastal road.

4. Lindos: The Most Dramatic View in Rhodes

No list of Rhodes' greatest sunsets would be complete without Lindos. The whitewashed village cascades down a hillside toward a perfect horseshoe bay, and above it all, the ancient Acropolis of Lindos rises on a sheer rocky promontory 116 metres above the sea.

At sunset, the Acropolis columns and Doric temple ruins are silhouetted against a sky that shifts through every shade of fire. Below, the bay of Saint Paul — where the Apostle Paul is said to have landed during his travels — turns from cobalt to liquid gold. Sit at one of the rooftop terraces in the village and watch the whole spectacle unfold as evening swallows the last of the day.

Lindos is approximately 45 minutes south of Olympus Hospitality and well worth the evening drive. Many of our guests combine a Lindos sunset with dinner at one of the hilltop restaurants before returning along the moonlit coast road.

5. Prasonisi: Where Two Seas Meet

For something truly extraordinary, drive to the southern tip of Rhodes: Prasonisi. Here, the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea meet, separated by a narrow sandy causeway that at low tide becomes walkable. The geography is unique in Greece, and the sunsets here are unlike anywhere else on the island.

With open water on both sides and the horizon stretching in nearly every direction, the evening sky takes on a vast, almost cinematic quality. The colour palette is bolder here — deeper magentas, more intense golds — and the wind from the open sea adds a wildness to the experience. Prasonisi is also Europe's premier kitesurfing destination, and the colourful kites dancing against a sunset sky create an image that feels almost otherworldly.

The drive from Olympus Hospitality takes around an hour, making it an ideal afternoon-into-evening excursion.
