The Twelve Olympian Gods: A Guide to the Myths That Inspired Our Suites

Discover the twelve Olympian gods of Greek mythology — the divine pantheon whose timeless stories of power, love, wisdom and adventure shape the soul of Olympus Hospitality on Rhodes Island.

High above the clouds, on the snow-capped peak of Mount Olympus, a council of twelve immortals once ruled the cosmos. Their stories — woven through three thousand years of poetry, tragedy and stone — still shape how we imagine power, love and beauty today. They are the twelve Olympian gods, and they are the heart of everything we do at Olympus Hospitality.

When we created our luxury apartments in Marathonas, just a five-minute walk from the Aegean and ten minutes from Rhodes Town, we were inspired by these gods not for novelty's sake but because Rhodes itself is a place where myth still feels close. The light, the sea, the ancient stones — they all whisper. This guide walks you through the twelve Olympians, the qualities they embody, and how their spirit lives on in the suites we have crafted in their honour.

Zeus, King of the Gods

Zeus is the sky-father, ruler of thunder and lightning, the supreme authority of the Olympian council. His domain is the heavens, his weapon the thunderbolt, his symbol the eagle. The Greeks turned to Zeus as the keeper of order, the guarantor of oaths, the protector of guests — a beautiful detail for a hospitality brand.

Our Zeus Suite carries his commanding spirit: bold lines, generous space, a sense of being elevated above the everyday. It is the suite for those who arrive on Rhodes wanting to feel like sovereigns of their own holiday.

Hera, Queen of Heaven

Hera is the goddess of marriage, family and the dignity of the home. Often portrayed as fierce and proud, she stood beside Zeus as queen of the gods and protector of women. Her sacred animals — the peacock and the cow — symbolised beauty and abundance.

For travellers, Hera's energy is the energy of homecoming. A Rhodes holiday at its best feels less like a transaction and more like being welcomed into a household where you are honoured.

Poseidon, God of the Sea

For an island like Rhodes, no god matters more than Poseidon. Brother of Zeus, ruler of every wave and storm, he carried his trident through depths no mortal could fathom. Sailors poured wine into the sea to win his favour. Cities built temples to keep his fury at bay.

Our Poseidon Suite is for those who feel called to the water. Step out of the door, walk five minutes, and you are at the same Aegean Sea that Greek sailors crossed three thousand years ago. The view, the breeze, the salt in the air — it is Poseidon's gift, freely given.

Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest

Demeter rules over grain, fertility and the cycles of the seasons. The Greeks credited her with teaching humanity how to farm, and her grief for her daughter Persephone was said to bring the winter every year.

A stay on Rhodes is, in its quiet way, a Demeter holiday. The local olive oil, the tomatoes ripened in volcanic soil, the honey from village hives — these are the gifts of a land she still seems to bless.

Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and Strategy

Born fully grown from the head of Zeus, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, of cities, of weaving and of clever warfare. Her city, Athens, took her name. Her bird, the owl, became the universal symbol of knowledge.

Athena's spirit lives on Rhodes in the medieval streets of the Old Town, in the stone fortifications of the Knights, in every traveller who comes here to learn rather than simply to lounge. She will inspire one of our forthcoming suites — a space designed for the curious-minded.

Apollo, God of Light and the Arts

Apollo is the radiant one — god of music, poetry, prophecy, the sun and healing. He stood for clarity, harmony and beauty in proportion. The famous oracle at Delphi was his.

On Rhodes, Apollo's presence is felt in the quality of light itself. The island is famously bathed in over 300 days of sunshine a year. Wake early, watch the dawn over the Aegean, and you will understand why the ancients believed a god drove the sun across the sky.

Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and the Moon

Apollo's twin sister, Artemis, ruled the wild places — the forests, the mountains, the moonlit night. She was the patroness of young women and untamed creatures, fiercely independent and famously chaste.

Her energy is the energy of solo travel, of long hikes into the hills above Lindos, of swimming in coves that no road quite reaches. Rhodes still has plenty of these untamed corners, waiting for the Artemis in you.

Ares, God of War

Ares is the god of raw martial fury — bold, dangerous, magnificent in battle. The Romans worshipped his counterpart Mars as their highest god, but the Greeks had a more complicated relationship with him: respected, yes, but also feared.

Our Ares Suite channels his commanding aesthetic — deeper tones, dramatic textures, a sense of confidence and presence. It is for guests who like their luxury with a little edge.

Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Beauty

Born from sea foam off the coast of Cyprus, Aphrodite is the goddess of love, desire and beauty in all its forms. She inspired poets, started wars, and reminded mortals that pleasure is sacred.

Rhodes is, frankly, an Aphrodite kind of island. The colour of the water at sunset. The candlelit tavernas in the Old Town. The way time slows down for couples who come here. Our forthcoming Aphrodite suite will be designed for romance — a space worthy of the goddess herself.

Hephaestus, God of Craftsmanship

Hephaestus is the divine smith — god of fire, metalwork and skilled craftsmanship. He forged the thunderbolts of Zeus, the armour of Achilles and the chariot of the sun. He was the only Olympian who worked, and the gods relied on his quiet brilliance.

Every well-made thing on a Rhodes holiday — the hand-thrown ceramics, the wrought-iron lanterns, the kitchens our team designed for our suites — owes something to Hephaestus.

Hermes, Messenger of the Gods

Hermes is the swift one — messenger, guide of travellers, patron of merchants and protector of those on the road. He carried souls to the underworld and ferried news across the cosmos.

If any god watches over a Rhodes holiday, it is Hermes. From the moment your flight lands at Diagoras Airport to the taxi that ferries you to Marathonas, you are in his care.

Dionysus, God of Wine and Festivity

The youngest Olympian, Dionysus is the god of wine, theatre, ecstasy and joyful release. He taught humanity the vine and the dance, and reminded us that life is meant to be tasted, not merely endured.

A glass of crisp Assyrtiko on a Rhodes terrace at sundown is a small offering to Dionysus. So is laughter shared with friends in the Old Town. He is the god you invite without realising.

Stay Where the Gods Still Walk

The twelve Olympians may belong to myth, but their spirit is still woven through everyday life on Rhodes — in the sea, the sun, the food, the welcome. At Olympus Hospitality in Marathonas, we have built our Zeus, Poseidon and Ares Suites as small temples to that spirit, with the Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite suites coming soon.

Whether you are drawn to Poseidon's sea, Apollo's light, or Dionysus's tavernas, your Rhodes story begins here. Book direct at www.olympushospitality.eu and let myth meet luxury — five minutes from the beach, ten from Rhodes Town, and worlds away from ordinary.
